Trapped election-night confidence
By Komlan A. Aloysh
They were confident and loud with unyielding certainty
When the night fell weightily on us.
They believed deeply their words and deeds just before
They closed their eyes and let nature do its part.
For us, we stood on blazing charcoal.
We hugged our hearts in our palms, waiting to survive the night’s uncertain stare.
We learnt that such undiscerning confidence in U.K. thrust same ghost-tale on them,
Just months before.
And that confidence now birthed deep unseated regrets.
The few of us who stared beyond the bright eyes of that confidence
Were quickly faulted as entertaining the ‘unentertainable.’
We were made to languish in guilty thoughts about what history has shown us.
We were trapped in our own minds with fear of #Brexit’s impending visit.
And that kept us awake and monitoring our heartbeats;
Observing how seconds, minutes, and hours exchanged farewells.
We held our breaths with our minds and mouth sealed,
Knowing what awaited us when dawn showed its frowned face.
Those who mocked our thoughts awoke to their own nightmares,
The reality that they vehemently rejected and didn’t want to hear.
At dawn, they woke up at the back door of their confidence;
And now, they regale the thoughts of denial while starring in reality’s assured eyes.
